Emma Barnes

Program Officer, Ocean Communications | WWF-US

About

The Arctic is a priority region for WWF-US. Emma supports the Global Arctic Programme by sharing the work of WWF-US’s Alaska-based field team and contributing to the Arctic Programme’s communications efforts.

As a member of the WWF-US Oceans team, Emma’s job is to support the work of our area-based Ocean teams and community partners. This includes producing and distributing stories, designing print and digital pamphlet and presentation materials, and coordinating with other communications staff around the WWF network.

Emma has a bachelor’s degree in Zoology and Environmental Science and a master’s degree in Environmental Science. She began science communications in graduate school, where she was part of a research consortium studying the toxicological impacts of the Gulf of Mexico Deepwater Horizon oil spill on sports fish. Emma’s master’s thesis focused on communicating the impacts of the spill via a multimedia short film and social media campaign. Emma then began working at WWF following the completion of my thesis.

Outside of work, Emma enjoys spending time exploring her city, including finding new hiking paths, being a part of a local book club, and sourcing locally produced yarns to supply her ever-growing list of crochet projects.
