ABOUT
As the Senior Sustainable Development Advisor, Elena’s work is to advocate solutions that have long-term time horizons and are consistent with the 2030 UN Sustainable Development Goals. She organizes her work around three pillars:
- A gradual phasing out of oil and gas exploration and extraction in the Arctic.
- Promoting energy transformation in the local economies away from fossil fuels and towards reliance on renewable energy sources.
- Advocating for better environmental standards in Arctic shipping.
Elena relies on a broad participation of stakeholders, with a special attention given to the voices of Northern and Indigenous communities.
Her previous experiences include, among others, work for the Indigenous Services and Northern Affairs (Canada), WWF Russia, and the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society (LMU, Germany).
Elena completed her doctoral dissertation in the University of British Columbia (Canada), researching the history of nature protection policies in Canada’s British Columbia, Norway and New Zealand.
In her free time, she likes reading literature and popular science, playing guitar, and hiking/skiing/camping with family and friends.
