Arctic Regional Gathering under the LCIPP
- Communities
The Arctic Regional Gathering under the Local Communities and Indigenous Peoples Platform (LCIPP) is scheduled for October 2-5, 2023, in Kirkenes, Norway. It aims to address Arctic climate challenges, emphasizing Indigenous Knowledge, climate research, adaptation, mitigation, human rights, and climate funding. The event underscores ethical climate action and Indigenous rights protection. Martin Sommerkorn, Head of Conservation at the WWW Global Arctic Programme, will be there and participate in a session on equitable inclusion of Indigenous Knowledge, ensuring equity and justice in climate action as the UN body, The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) prepares for the seventh Assessment Reporting cycle (AR7).
Martin Sommerkorn says:
“We find this event to be of great importance and timeliness. We stand prepared and supportive of partnering with Arctic Indigenous Peoples on their ethical, equitable climate action agendas, encompassing mitigation, adaptation, resilience, and governance. This includes our commitment to collaborate on nature-based climate solutions, particularly Indigenous-led conservation efforts in the Arctic and beyond, including engagement with the Arctic Council and UNFCCC.”
