The WWF Global Arctic Programme (GAP) advances a well-managed, biodiverse and resilient Arctic through advocacy and implementation of strategic conservation initiatives led by a team of multi-disciplinary experts. The Senior Communications Manager provides leadership, strategic direction and coordination of Arctic communications within the WWF network and to external audiences.

We are looking for a strategic communications manager with a strong advocacy and/or conservation communications background, proven international experience, and fluent, flawless English. This is a dynamic, challenging senior role where you will work closely with key conservation experts and communication teams in the Arctic and the broader WWF Network to take new findings, guidelines and recommendations and help bring these to and meaningfully engage key decision-makers and changemakers. This includes leading integrated communications that combines innovative digital approaches with traditional communications to drive awareness, influence policy, and support behavior change.

You will work from WWF’s office in Stockholm, Sweden and support communications and audience engagement for WWF’s work throughout the Arctic.

Major duties and responsibilities

  • Lead Arctic-wide strategic communications planning, and coordinate network-wide Arctic messaging to ensure a cohesive WWF voice
  • Oversee and contribute to the creation and updating of all communications channels and materials as necessary to help disseminate WWF GAP messages to key target audiences, including by coordinating work with WWF GAP’s Digital Communications Specialist
  • Design and execute integrated communications that combine digital tools (e.g., social media, video, data visualizations, storytelling platforms) with traditional formats (e.g., print publications, op-eds, events) to maximize advocacy impact
  • Manage, write and/or edit core communications materials, including the WWF GAP website, print publications (such as the Circle magazine), briefing materials, and digital content
  • Support, coordinate, and guide a small, remote team of communicators across WWF Arctic National offices to ensure collaboration, quality control, and consistency in communications outputs and provide support to the WWF Network broadly on issues relevant to the Arctic

Qualifications and experience

  • 10+ years experience in communications with a demonstrated understanding of scientific or conservation communications needs and skills, and demonstrated ability to think strategically about communications for advocacy purposes
  • Strong English writing and editing skills with proven international experience in effective storytelling to motivate an audience, and translate scientific and technical information for non-scientific audiences, whether policy-makers, practitioners or the general public
  • Proven ability to develop and lead multi-platform communications strategies that integrate digital innovation (e.g. social, web, email, multimedia) with traditional media to influence public discourse and policy outcomes.
  • Familiarity and interest in environmental and nature conservation issues; direct work experience with Arctic issues is a bonus
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully deliver multiple tasks with limited time and budget, direct/supervise external contractors, and coordinate remote, cross-cultural teams, with an ability to delegate, collaborate, and maintain accountability.

The successful candidate will report to the Director, Global Arctic Programme and be part of an international multidisciplinary core team, working closely with other WWF staff, particularly in offices across the Arctic.
