Arctic Youth

Arctic youth  face unique challenges and opportunities due to factors such as climate change, cultural preservation, economic development, and environmental sustainability. They play a crucial role in shaping the future of their communities and addressing issues related to Arctic conservation, Indigenous rights, and sustainable development.

Why are youth important for the Arctic?

Arctic youth must play a vital role in shaping policies that affect their future and have expressed a desire for greater agency to act and influence the policies that affect them.

Raising awareness about the Arctic crisis, including the pivotal role of Arctic ice in mitigating climate change, is essential for global protection. To catalyze bold government action and preserve the Arctic, these young voices must be heard. Despite their profound insights and concerns about the daily impact of climate change on their lives, Arctic youth often find themselves marginalized in decision-making processes. Therefore, it’s crucial to empower Arctic youth with the skills, opportunities, and connections needed to advocate effectively for climate and environmental policies.

Incorporating the perspectives of Arctic youth into policy discussions is paramount, given their firsthand experience of rapid environmental changes. Neglecting their voices undermines effective climate action and threatens the Arctic’s future resilience. It’s imperative to prioritize their inclusion to ensure a sustainable future for all.

Youth Together for Arctic Futures

In January 2024, Arctic and European organizations, including WWF, initiated the EU funded Youth Together for Arctic Futures project to empower young people in shaping a sustainable Arctic. This 4-year endeavor aims to provide them with essential skills and opportunities while prioritizing underrepresented groups and involving European youth in meaningful dialogue.
