In this event co-organized by Inuit Circumpolar Council and WWF Global Arctic Programme, a panel of Inuit leaders and topical experts will discuss Indigenous leadership to establish networks of protected and conserved areas that can deliver nature-based solutions.
Where: Panda Pavilion or online
When: December 8, 12:30 p.m. GST
This session will showcase how Indigenous leadership in establishing networks of protected and conserved areas can deliver nature based solutions, including for food security. These discussions are highly timely as we look towards ongoing global action around 30×30, discussions around the Convention on Biological Diversity and Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction, the development of the Loss & Damage Fund, and financing of nature-based solutions. Panelists will discuss how Inuit are actively working to reframe Arctic conservation goals and approaches to center on Indigenous Peoples, Knowledge, governance, adaptation needs, and intergenerational equity. The speakers will highlight ongoing efforts, priorities, and examples of Inuit-led conservation initiatives and how Inuit envision Arctic conservation as a means to strengthen our resilience and capacity to adapt in a climate-changing Arctic. The speakers will discuss how equitable and ethical engagement and use of Inuit Knowledge makes conservation efforts more robust, sustainable, and publicly viable.
