Introducing WWF Greenland’s new programme manager
- Greenland
Jane P. Lantz wants to bring the organization closer to decision-makers and help Greenlanders continue to live in harmony with nature.
Lantz took over the position as WWF Greenland’s programme manager from Malene Lynge in August 2026. She accepted the position after several years as party secretary to the Inuit Ataqatigiit party.
Her long experience with political processes and collaborations across interests makes her well suited to the job, says Agnete Schønau Winther, Conservation director for WWF Denmark.
“She brings a deep understanding of Greenlandic society, extensive experience in politics and partnerships, and a profound love for Greenland’s natural environment,” says Winther.
Plenty to do
Lantz looks forward to bring WWF closer to the political processes in Kalaallit Nunaat, the name of the territory in the Greenlandic language.
“WWF is still a relatively new NGO in Kalaallit Nunaat. We have been around for just over ten years but not all decision-makers are familiar with WWF. This is why I believe we need to continue letting people know who we are and why we are here,” Lantz says.
Besides strengthening WWF’s position, there are plenty of big challenges to tackle.
The Arctic is warming faster than any other region on Earth, affecting the way of life there.
“When you harm nature in Kalaallit Nunaat, you harm everything. In Kalaallit Nunaat, we live in harmony with nature; our culture and identity stem from the natural world that surrounds us,” says Lantz.
Nature isn’t separate from humanity in Kalaallit Nunaat. We have a holistic way of thinking; when we think of nature, we include people, animals, and culture.
This mindset is not just a moral compass, it is a way of sustaining a living.
“Our economy is heavily dependent on our living resources, which is why it is also important to take care of our ecosystem,” she adds, stressing that WWF Greenland is supportive of hunting, provided it is done in a sustainable manner.
In the eye of the storm
Amid geopolitical tension and a global rush for resources, Lantz stresses the need for nature and the local population to be firmly included in all decision-making processes.
“Our country is in the eye of the storm not only because of our geographic location but because people dream about exploiting our mineral and hydrocarbon resources,” she says.
“If any of our resources are to be exploited, it must be done in an environmentally responsible manner and in dialogue with us – a voice that the world can hear and trust.”
No other place to be
Outside of work, you may find Lantz playing handball and spending time with her daughters. She loves Greenland and everything it offers.
“There is no other place she’d rather be, says Lantz. The nature, the peacefulness and the open spaces make life there perfect,” she says.
