WWF Greenland strengthen ties with local communities
- Greenland
New memorandum will improve collaboration on nature conservation between WWF and Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq, the largest municipality in the world by area.
Earlier in October 2026, Jane P. Lantz, Head of WWF’s Greenland programme, and Sermersooq municipality Mayor Avaaraq S. Olsen signed a memorandum of understanding.
The aim is to increase the collaboration on nature conservation, sustainable development, and community engagement in the municipality.
Polar bear control
For over ten years, WWF has maintained a strong presence in Ittoqqortoormiit, one of the towns in Sermersooq.
In Ittoqqortoormiit, WWF has supported the polar bear patrol, helping prevent encounters with polar bears. The patrols will no be developed further.
The improved collaboration will also increase educational activities at local schools and strengthening the collaboration with Siu-Tsiu, a Greenlandic social Enterprise working on increased employment and sustainability.
Says Jane P. Lantz:
“Greenlandic society faces a wide range of challenges related to nature and climate that significantly affect people’s lives. Over the past decade, WWF has worked closely with local communities, local authorities, and organizations, yielding positive results for both nature and people. That is why I am incredibly pleased we have a memorandum of understanding with Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq, it provides us with the foundation to further strengthen this good work.”
